UK Companies House Company Search & SIC Codes
Companies House publishes a free monthly snapshot of basic company data for every live UK company. It's enough to search the register by industry and place, and, if you compare one month with the next, to see what changed.
What the monthly snapshot is
- Source: the Companies House Free Company Data Product.
- Coverage: live companies only. The 1 October 2026 snapshot had 5,704,711.
- Freshness: compiled to the end of the previous month and published within 5 working days of month end. Companies registered since then appear in the next snapshot.
- Fields: status, type, incorporation date, SIC codes, accounts and confirmation statement dates, charges, previous names and registered office.
Turning two snapshots into a change feed
Compare each company with last month's file and you get typed changes: - new on the register, or left the register - status changed (liquidation, administration, proposal to strike off) - name, SIC code or company type changed - registered office moved - accounts or confirmation statement now overdue, or newly filed - new or changed charges
Two things to know: - Volume. October 2026 had 1,307,278 changes against September across all types, so filter by change type, SIC code, postcode or status, or watch a list of company numbers. - Leaving the register. A company that drops out of the file usually means it was dissolved, because the snapshot only lists live companies.
Licence and personal data
- Licence. Companies House states that it "imposes no rules or requirements on how the information on the public register is used". Register information is supplied under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and the Database Regulations. It isn't released under the Open Government Licence. Companies House asks reusers to take their own advice on third-party copyright in filed information, and not to reproduce the Crown insignia.
- Home addresses. Some very small companies use a home address as their registered office. Keeping only the post town and postcode avoids publishing street addresses.
We built this
Disclosure: Your Evenings Ltd built and sells this. It's independent and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Companies House. UK Companies House Company Search & SIC Codes on the Apify Store works from the monthly snapshot and gives you:
- Lookup by company number, or by name (exact or normalised matching).
- Search across all live companies by SIC code, status, company type, incorporation date, post town, postcode area or district, overdue flags, outstanding charges and name keywords.
- A typed change feed, and a monitor that saves your list as a free baseline and then returns only what changed.
- Company rows, ready to use. The registered office comes as post town, postcode and country, and every row credits Companies House as the source and links to the company's page on the Companies House service.
Pricing: $0.003 per company row and $0.005 per change row (base prices; higher Apify plans pay less). Status rows, filtered-out companies, unmatched names and duplicates are free.
FAQ
What does a monthly monitor cost? A monitor of 500 suppliers with 12 changes costs 12 × $0.005 = $0.06 plus Apify's start event. The first run saves your list as a free baseline.
How up to date is Companies House's monthly data? It's compiled to the end of the previous month and published within 5 working days of month end.
Why is a company missing? The snapshot lists live companies only, and companies registered since the last month end appear in the next one.
Is Companies House data under the Open Government Licence? No. Companies House says it imposes no rules on how register information is used, but it's supplied under copyright and database law, not the OGL. Don't reproduce the Crown insignia.
