Shopify's "Has no standardized identifier" setting: when to turn it on

Published 30 October 2026

If you ship to the EU from Shopify, you've probably met a setting called "Has no standardized identifier". It matters because, since 1 November 2026, the EU expects a standard barcode for most items in parcels worth €150 or less, or a clear statement that there isn't one. This guide goes through that one setting in depth. For the wider picture, see our guide on what’s changed since 1 November 2026.

What the setting does

The EU asks for three identifiers per item: your own product code, the maker's code, and a standard barcode (GTIN, EAN, UPC or ISBN) where one exists. The Commission's guidance (version of 5 October 2026) says makers have no obligation to assign barcodes. Where there isn't one, the declaration carries the code Y081 instead.

Turning on "Has no standardized identifier" tells Shopify that the product has no standard barcode. Shopify's help page says that when it's on, "no standardized identifier is sent to customs for that item, even when one is saved on the variant".

When to turn it on

Shopify says to make the declaration "only when the product truly has no GTIN, EAN, UPC, or ISBN". Typical cases:

When not to turn it on

Check your barcodes first

Shopify's 29 October changelog added free GTIN suggestions. Shopify checks barcodes that look like GTINs against the GS1 registry and suggests the right type. In the products and inventory bulk editors you can accept or dismiss all suggestions at once. It's worth doing before you declare anything, so you don't mark a product "none" when it has a real GTIN.

How to set it on one product

From the help page:

  1. Go to Products and open the product, or the variant if it has variants.
  2. In Shipping, make sure Physical product is on, then click More details.
  3. Under EU customs declaration, turn on Has no standardized identifier.
  4. Click Save.

How to set it on many products

Shopify's 24 October changelog says you can "add barcodes and declarations to many products at once in the bulk editor". The product CSV file has a Barcodes column with barcode types, but no column for this declaration, so use the bulk editor rather than a CSV import for this part.

A tip: filter or sort first so you only select products that really have no barcode, such as your handmade range.

Mistakes to avoid

At the label

Shopify's help says that since 1 November 2026, a Shopify label for an EU parcel worth €150 or less can't be bought if an item has neither a standard barcode nor this declaration. You can fix it on the label page with Edit customs declaration. If you buy labels outside Shopify, Shopify says to make sure the identifiers reach your carrier through the method you use today, so ask your carrier how they want "no barcode" items shown.

If you'd like to see which variants are missing barcodes, our free check (it's our own tool) reads a Shopify product export in your browser. It's a quick indication, not a full check.

FAQ

Is "Has no standardized identifier" the same as being exempt? No. Exemptions come from the HS code. The setting just says no standard barcode exists.

Can I set it in bulk? Yes, in the bulk editor, according to Shopify's 24 October changelog. Not by CSV.

Do I need to buy barcodes instead? The Commission says makers have no obligation to assign them, so for products without one, the declaration is the route.

Does it apply to parcels over €150? Shopify's label check applies to EU parcels worth €150 or less.
