Guide

The same barcode is on all my variants. Does that matter for EU parcels?

It's a common find for merchants as they tidy up for the EU's product identifier rule: a parent barcode copied onto every size and colour. It's worth fixing, and it's usually quick.

Why it matters

Shopify saves the identifiers on each variant and reuses them on every label and customs declaration for that variant. So if five variants share one barcode, that one number goes out for all five.

GS1, the body that issues GTINs, says each variation (each size, each colour, and each combination) needs its own GTIN. A number copied across variants describes one of them at best.

How to find the copies

What to put instead

  1. The variant has its own barcode (on the packaging, or from the maker): enter it with the GTIN, EAN, UPC or ISBN type. Shopify also accepts a Custom barcode that's a valid 8, 12, 13 or 14-digit GTIN, and its GS1 suggestions can switch those to the GTIN type, in bulk if you like.
  2. It genuinely has none (handmade, made to order, own label never registered): clear the copied number and turn on "Has no standardized identifier" for that variant. Don't type "None" or a made-up number.

For lots of products, Shopify's help says you can use a CSV import or the bulk editor. Our main checklist covers all three identifiers.

If new variants keep copying the barcode

Merchants have reported new variants picking up the parent's number. Check each new variant before you save, and if it keeps happening, check whether an app that edits products is writing to the barcode field.

Shopify labels

Shopify's help says that for an EU parcel worth €150 or less, a label bought in the Shopify admin can't be bought while an item has neither a standard barcode nor the declaration. You can fix it on the label page under "Edit customs declaration". If you buy labels elsewhere, ask your carrier how they want identifiers sent.

Want a second pair of eyes?

Our free check (it's ours) runs in your browser and flags missing, invalid, placeholder and repeated barcodes in your Shopify export. Our $49 Check (USD, one-off) goes through the same file and sends back a checked file plus a handover file for your carrier. It never makes up barcodes. This is general information, not legal or customs advice, and we're not customs brokers.
